What a Great day it was at the Havelock Mussel Festival 2014
Saturday 15th March 2014
Despite the major weather warnings, once again the Havelock Mussel Festival was a great success and enjoyed by so many that attended. Although numbers were lower and the skies a bit greyer this year, this didn’t detract from the great entertainment, exciting competitions and stalls with a variety of tasty food, wine and beer available. Plenty of shelter in the Johnstone’s Barge marquee for the odd shower that came over!
It was good to see all the hard work from our volunteer committee Wayne McDonald, Debbie Stone, Carol Caley, Maurice Coffee and co-opt member Pim Melish along with the team at Marlborough 4 Fun come to fruition in such a positive way.
Funny man Paul Ego lived up to his reputation and provided a lot of laughs introducing the various acts which were all a hit and enjoyed by festival goers. The New Zealand King Salmon marquee was once again packed to the rafters by food lovers watching demos by Chelsea Winter, Chris Fortune & Roger Raizada and enjoying samples of the dishes as well as matching Yealands wines.
One of the most exciting aspects of the festival was the Guinness book of records attempt that was well and truly smashed by Angela Fredericks representing Kono (after 6 years of different mussel openers attempts!) with a time of 1.59 to open 100 mussels compared to the last record held of 2 mins 11 in 2007. Congratulations from the Havelock Mussel Festival to Angela – you are officially the fastest in the world!
