Southern Jam Youth Jazz Festival
5th - 8th August 2009

The Southern Jam Youth Jazz Festival was back again in Marlborough for the 7th year running from Wednesday 5th August to Sat 8th August and proved to be the best yet !! a fantastic showcase of Jazz.

The festival was a competition for 14 South Island schools/colleges with various categories including the overall Festival winner.  We had 14 big bands & 7 combo bands entered in this year’s festival.  Before the competition element the bands participated in master classes taken by some members of the world renowned Royal New Zealand Air Force Band.

The bands also had the opportunity to play to the public in many public performances around the Marlborough region and of course there was the finale Gala concert.

Once again it proved to be  a wonderful opportunity for schools in the South Island to come together to learn and develop their musical skills, to perform to live audiences and to compete in a quality musical competition  - so all in all they were kept very busy during their stay in Marlborough!

Gala Concert
As a finale to the festival there was a Gala Concert which took place at the Peter Mark Floorpride Marlborough Civic Theatre – a wonderful venue for the schools to perform at. Performances included an All Star Band picked from the various school bands by the RNZAF judges, the winning schools and a performance by the RNZAF Combo Band – the first time in Marlborough. This was a fantastic night, enjoyed by both performers and audience as they played and listened to some great quality jazz that the community may otherwise have to spend a lot of money travelling long distances to see.

A huge thank you to the Royal New Zealand Air Force judges, the participating students, teachers & supporters, the public venues, the school venues, and all our sponsors. It was a fantastic week, enjoyed by all.
